Mother: Checkmate
Columbus was born on July 14, 1997, to Checkmate,
whom we had only bought at the pet store eleven days earlier. Columbus got his
name from being the first baby explorer to find his way into the tunnels. He loved
to run off and discover new things, so we thought Columbus was a perfect choice
for his name. We were going to keep only one baby from that litter, Michaela,
but decided to keep Columbus as well. First of all, he was adorable, but secondly,
he liked to nip at our fingers, and we didn't want him to bite his new owner.
We figured, correctly as it turned out, that he would become tamer with time and
patience.
I can't believe it, but I do not have any older photos of Columbus.
Both he and his sister, Michaela, looked very much
alike with light tan and white fur. A few more baby photos are on Checkmate's
page.
Columbus outlived his sister by two months and died at the age
of 2 years and 4 months in November of 1999.
